40% of Homeless parents in Richmond have jobs

Our friends at Homeward created this info graphic to illustrate a disturbing trend in Richmond VA: homelessness among families and children. The fact that 40% of homeless parents are employed should shock us all. Despite having a job and income, there are still families ending up homeless.

This is yet another indicator that the housing crisis has not solved the affordability problem. Housing costs have actually gone up for Virginians (contributing to the increase in poverty). A new post from The Economist points out that:

the latest CPI figures show that rents in America are up 2.1% over the past year and 0.9% in the last three months alone—nearly twice the increase in core inflation.

A Virginia Housing Trust fund would save everyone money by investing in preventing homelessness through rapid rehousing and supportive housing.
